Here at South East Formwork, one of the services we specialise in is concrete stair installation. In this article, we’d like to talk about some of the benefits of concrete stairs, why so many of our clients choose them, and why they’re a far more versatile option than you might first think.
It should go without saying that concrete is a highly durable material. Long lasting and able to stand up to all kinds of damage, concrete is incredibly sturdy. In the event of damage, it’s also fairly easy to repair and replace, massively reducing the potential for maintenance costs.
Speaking of costs, concrete is a highly affordable material by the standards of most building projects, allowing you to do more with less. This allows more freedom of design so you can add small visual touches such as rounded edges or even supporting pillars without driving up the cost too much.
Accounting for ergonomics can be a designer’s nightmare. Often, practicality is in direct competition with visual flair. But when it comes to stairs, ergonomics have to come first as a matter of health and safety.
Fortunately concrete is a very practical material to work with from an ergonomic standpoint. In our case, all our concrete stair installations are bespoke to the building and so can be altered to match the specific needs/style of the surrounding architecture as well as any unique ergonomic considerations of the space.
When people think about concrete stairs, they often picture stark, brutalist architecture – large and imposing. Although concrete stairs certainly do lend themselves well to this style, it’s worth noting that they can be made to match almost any surroundings with the right planning and consideration of design.
For example, when paired with natural light and lots of wood tones, concrete stairs can feel pleasantly modern. Alternatively, they can be painted, carpeted, or even textured to help them blend in with the style around them.
It’s worth noting that these aesthetic considerations can also be practical. For example, painted concrete can serve as a safety feature or a way of communicating valuable information like directions. Similarly, textured concrete is often chosen because it gives that little bit of extra grip.
